Back in the days, this street used to be called “The cat’s street”, it’s right next to the hotel and as much as it seems tight and small, it has plany history on it..
\nBack at XII century, this road was the connection between one of the most important entering doors of “Guimar\u00e3es Ville” (S\u00e3o Domingos’s Door) to the city of Porto.<\/p>\n
On the first half of XVI century, was builted, on the end of D. Jo\u00e3o’s street, an hospital and an lepra’s clinic, and after a while, the clinic was replaced by S\u00e3o L\u00e1zaro’s chapel, in 1600.<\/p>\n
Later, was builted an monument called “Padr\u00e3o de D. Jo\u00e3o I” inspired by religious arquitecture, gothic and mixed with renaissance style.<\/p>\n
This monument was made to celebrate Portugal’s victory against Spain at Aljubarrota battle. After the confront, D. Jo\u00e3o I came back to Guimar\u00e3es and as he arrived at D. Jo\u00e3o I’s monument, he started a path, barefoot, honouring a promess previusly made to Saint Maria of Guimar\u00e3es for the victory. He also distribuited valiues materials he brought from the enimy including an golden cord with the same size as the distance between the S. Jo\u00e3o I’s monument and Oliveira’s church.<\/p>\n
Dispite the arquitetonic urban evolution, D. Jo\u00e3o I’s structure maintain, in nowdays, the same caracteristic medivial style.<\/p>\n
